435,000 Vacant Jobs in Canada in First Three Months of 2019

Canada is going through a major labour crisis with nearly 435,000 unfilled jobs, which is a striking sign of the growing labour shortage in Canada as the economy heats up.

Canada’s private-sector job vacancy rate has been steadily climbing for the past 2 years and has reached another record high in the first quarter of the year, peaking at 3.3 percent, which is 0.1 percentage point up from the previous quarter. According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB)’s latest report total 435,000 jobs sat unfilled for at least four months during the first quarter of the year 2019.

Canada has all types of jobs available across all the provinces; however, the industries facing tight labour markets are construction, personal services, agriculture, hospitality, professional services, and transportation.

Leading the pack is Quebec, which saw the greatest year-over-year increase in job vacancies in Canada with the vacancy rate reaching 4.1 percent. British Columbia’s vacancy rate has also jumped to 3.6 percent and 3.3 percent in Ontario.

Opportunity for International Skilled Workers With Canadian businesses having a historically hard time finding employees, it comes as great news for the skilled workers aspiring to secure a permanent resident in Canada. And what’s problematic for the employers could be good for the employees, as the shortage of labour means higher wages for the workers.

With the country’s aging population and the rising number of Canadians who are reaching the retirement age, thousands of empty positions are waiting to be filled. It’s an opportunity for international talent to get permanent resident status in Canada.

Seeing a dynamic increase in the vacant jobs the Federal government has decided to raise the immigration level and set a plan to accept over 1 million new immigrants by 2021 through economic-class immigration programs.
